Time For An Online Clean-Up

"You can't go back and make a new start, but you can start right now and make a brand new ending."  (James R. Sherman)

Hello, my lovely friends!

Every January, we all collectively decide to become "new people." We scrub the baseboards, donate the clothes we haven’t worn since 2019, and pretend we’re actually going to use that gym membership.

But while your spice rack is finally alphabetized, your digital life is likely still a dumpster fire.

I’ve always felt that a sparkling kitchen doesn't mean much if your desktop is buried under 400 "Untitled" screenshots and your inbox is screaming for help. To help you start the year without a digital migraine, here are the non-negotiable rituals I use to bleach my online life and start fresh.

 1. Clean out my laptop: I look through all my files and figure out what I need or don't. If there are any pictures I put on discs. I will then run a deep scan through the whole computer and sometimes I might clean it all the way back. I put all the blogs for that year on a separate disc to keep them safe.

2. Clean up my Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.: I toss out pictures I don't use. I also go through who I follow and unfollow things that no longer interest me. I got super organized on my Pinterest and have sub-folders in my folders.

3. Clean out my email: I have many folders and put different emails in. I look through them and clean everything out. I unsubscribe from emails that I don't like anymore.

4.  The Great Unsubscribe: If you haven't opened an email from that shoe brand in six months, you don't need their "flash sale" alerts. Hit unsubscribe and feel the weight lift.

5.  App Exorcism: Delete the apps that are just taking up space and data. If you haven't opened it since the last leap year, it's gotta go.

6.  Password Refresh: Give your security a glow-up. Update those "Password123" relics and let a manager do the heavy lifting.

And that is how I keep my digital life from looking like a hoarder’s basement. Do you bother with a fresh start, or are you more of a 'carry the clutter into the new year' kind of person?

I’m so grateful you spent a bit of your day here with me. I hope the rest of your morning, afternoon, or evening is filled with little moments of joy and a whole lot of cozy.  Take good care of yourself, and I’ll be looking forward to our next chat!

  1. I do a clean out too. I am the same as you asking if I am still interested in this email or not and unsubscribing, clearing out apps I no longer use and the like. Happy purging to all.

  3. It's Kathy. I just got a new computer so I cleaned out all my files before I transferred the over, but it's time to do the same with email and Facebook. Thanks for the detailed reminders!

  4. I'm kind of a "carry forward" kind of gal, but I do a periodic cleanup. I definitely clean up when I change machines. And every year I kind of look forward to your digital cleanup reminders, because they just make sense.
