Top Ten Favorites: Summer Blockbuster Movies

"We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!" Independence Day (1996)

Hello, my lovely friends!

Remember when summer meant nothing but endless free time, sticky popsicles, and the glorious, air-conditioned haven of a dark movie theater? There is a very specific kind of magic in those months between June and August, especially when we look back at the movies that basically raised us. We all have those core memories of piling into someone's beat-up car, splitting a massive tub of popcorn, and watching the screen light up with stories that we still quote to this day. Looking back at the ultimate summer blockbusters feels like flipping through an old photo album of our friendship, so let’s take a little trip down memory lane and talk about the movies that defined our summers.

It all really started back in the mid-seventies with Jaws, the movie that single-handedly made every single one of us terrified of the deep end of the pool, let alone the actual ocean. That simple, creeping two-note theme song became the soundtrack to every beach trip we ever took, and it basically invented the whole concept of a summer rush at the theater. A few years later, Harrison Ford came along in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and suddenly we were all completely obsessed with archaeology, leather jackets, and dodging giant rolling boulders. It was the ultimate adventure that we tried to recreate in our backyards, even if our version was just jumping over the garden hose. Then came National Lampoon's Vacation, and honestly, it felt a little too close to home. Watching the Griswolds suffer through that absolute disaster of a road trip felt exactly like being crammed into the backseat with your siblings, praying the station wagon wouldn't break down before you hit the beach.

By the mid-eighties, things got brilliantly weird. Back to the Future gave us the ultimate high-school dream of time travel, a shiny DeLorean, and a severe case of wanting to learn how to skateboard. We all secretly wished we could go back and see what our parents were like as teenagers, though mostly we just wanted a friend as cool as Marty McFly. The nineties kicked off with a massive shift into heavy-duty action, and Terminator 2 completely blew our minds. It wasn't just the incredible special effects or the liquid metal villain; it was the fact that Sarah Connor was the ultimate, fierce badass we all kind of wanted to be. Then, of course, came Jurassic Park. You can probably still remember the absolute awe of seeing those dinosaurs walk across the screen for the very first time, not to mention the sheer panic of the kitchen scene with the raptors. It was the kind of movie that made you hold your breath so hard your popcorn stayed untouched in your lap.

As the nineties wrapped up, the summers just kept getting bigger and louder. Independence Day became the definitive Fourth of July tradition, giving us Will Smith punching aliens in the face and a movie speech that still gives you goosebumps if you catch it on cable over a holiday weekend. Right on its heels was Men in Black, which brought that same incredible energy but added a hilarious, slick sci-fi vibe and a theme song that we all definitely knew every single word to. Moving into the two-thousand use, things took a turn toward the comic book worlds we grew up reading. Spider-Man 2 gave us the perfect mix of high-flying superhero action and real-life relationship drama, making us care just as much about whether Peter and Mary Jane would end up together as we did about the train fight. Finally, The Dark Knight closed out that golden era with a gritty, intense masterpiece that changed how we looked at movies forever, leaving us completely mesmerized by the late Heath Ledger’s performance.

It is wild to think about how much time has passed since we first sat through these in theatres, probably whispering to each other through the previews and fighting over who got the last red vine. These movies are so much more than just celluloid and special effects; they are the background noise to some of the best years of our lives. Next time the heat gets to be a little too much this summer, let’s close the blinds, turn the AC down as low as it goes, and throw one of these classics on the television. We can order a couple of pizzas, kick our feet up, and completely forget about real life for a couple of hours, just like we used to do when we were kids.
