Hello, my lovely friends!
I’m so sorry for being so quiet this past week. I hate disappearing like that, but things took a sudden turn when my mom had to go to the ER last week. She ended up being admitted to the hospital, and my sister flew out the very same day to be here with us. It’s been a whirlwind, and I’ve been focusing all my energy on being there for her and navigating everything with my family.
I truly appreciate your patience and for sticking by me while I’ve been away from the blog. Your kindness means the world to me, especially during stressful times like this. I’m looking forward to catching up with all of you soon, but for now, thank you for understanding why I needed to step away for a bit.
It all started so suddenly on Tuesday morning. I was fast asleep when my mom’s screams from the bathroom jolted me awake. She was in such agonizing pain that she couldn’t even sit down; even after taking her medication, she only found the tiniest bit of relief. It’s truly heartbreaking to watch someone you love suffer like that, and I knew we needed help. I called my sister immediately, and after hearing how bad things were, she headed right over so we could get Mom to the hospital.
We made it to the ER by noon the next day, but it turned into an exhausting marathon. We were there until 2:30 a.m. before they finally decided to admit her for the night. After a battery of tests and an MRI, the doctors initially suspected a spinal infection. However, the results showed that she actually has arthritis throughout her back and much of her body. While surgery isn't an option, they are starting her on stronger pain management to help her get some quality of life back. It’s been a scary few days, but we’re just relieved to finally have some answers and a plan to keep her comfortable.
The doctors decided it was best to keep her in the hospital for a few days. They wanted to keep a close eye on her pain levels and have her participate in some physical therapy to help her get back on her feet.
I’m so relieved to say that she was finally able to come home this past Sunday. We have a new plan in place to manage her discomfort, and it seems to be making a world of difference already. While we know she’ll likely always have some level of chronic pain to manage, seeing it under control with her new medication has been such a weight off our shoulders.
These last few days, she’s been taking things nice and slow, just gently moving around the house and settling back into her routine. It’s wonderful to see her doing so much better and feeling more like herself again.
My sister is still here with us and, thanks to a little convincing from my mom, she’s actually staying through Sunday. Having that extra time together has been such a gift, especially with everything else that has been going on.
Speaking of a lot going on, Mike arrived this past Saturday! I felt so bad for the poor guy; he was really thrown into the deep end the moment he landed. Between my mom being in the hospital and the pressure of meeting my sister for the first time, it was definitely a "sink or swim" kind of weekend.
I am so happy to share, though, that everything has worked out perfectly. My mom is finally back home where she belongs, and my sister absolutely hit it off with Mike. Seeing them get along so well has been a huge weight off my shoulders. Honestly, despite the initial craziness, things are just going great right now, and my heart feels very full.
So glad you could make it. Whether you’re starting your day or winding it down, I hope it’s a great one. Until we cross paths again—take care!

I am so glad to hear that things got figured out for your mom, I too, have arthritis and know that the flare ups can be really horrible depending where and the degree. I think it also helps a lot to know exactly what it is that is causing the pain, the mind seems to handle it better then. Yup, that was a whirl with Mike and your sister and all. Sounds like it really became something positive eventually. Huge hugs and prayers for your mom.
ReplyDeleteWhat a time you have had! Glad that it seems to be evening out a bit, and super grateful that all parties are getting on well! Hugs and prayers for all!

It's Kathy. I'm so sorry to hear this about your mom. How horrible for her to be in such pain and having it be chronic with the arthritis - that is such a terrible problem to have because there is so little we can do about it. I'm glad your sister was there to help and that the doctors kept your mom in the hospital to get her to a safe place where she could go home. And while it may have been difficult for Mike, it sounds like he stepped right in - probably something you really needed. I know when my daughter is having a particularly bad day, getting a hug from my husband is truly the best! Take care.
ReplyDeleteWow! So sorry to hear your Mom was in such severe pain. For sure, when the arthritis flares up it is mind altering! But so happy that the new meds are helping her.
